The Prosperidad de Chirinos cooperative was founded in 1968. It cultivates approximately 2,200 hectares in the mountainous region of San Ignacio, Cajamarca, where the high altitudes provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality coffees. Today, Prosperidad de Chirinos has 817 members, over a quarter of members are women. They are typically underrepresented in the coffee-producing sector. The cooperative aims to address this imbalance with a women's committee that promotes empowerment for female members, many of whom have held managerial positions.
A youth committee also exists that is focused on supporting and empowering young producers. A partnership with the National University of Jaén supports university education for 10 children of cooperative members each year. Members receive agronomic support, training in Good Agricultural Practices and access to financing through Prosperidad de Chirinos. The cooperative has a demonstration plot in San Ignacio where farmers can learn agronomic practices and how to implement them as well as fertilization techniques, pest management and best harvesting practices.
This coffee comes from the Cajamarca region, located in the northern part of Peru. The country is the world's largest exporter of organic Arabica coffee. Farmers use the fully-washed method. The cherry is pulped, fermented and dried in the sun. After drying, the coffee will be sold in its parchment to the cooperative. Membership in the cooperative greatly protects farmers from exploitation and can make a huge difference in income from coffee sales. However, currently only 15-25% of smallholder farmers have joined a cooperative group.
Corica gives this organic Cajamarca coffee from Peru a medium roast that produces a spicy cup result with notes of milk chocolate and cardamom.
